At first, it was just another side project, but with each new feature and update, people started getting addicted to it. The site was most famous for its “infinite scroll,” where users could share posts they found on the internet with their friends and acquaintances.

Ben Silbermann is a 29-year-old serial entrepreneur who has made a career of starting successful Internet companies. Since 2010, he has founded three technology companies, including Pinterest, an Internet phenomenon that has been downloaded over 30 million times.

Pinterest had an initial goal to make a proper “dish towel book” of the first 100 things you could pin on the website. But people were addicted to it, and the company has created a massive platform for people to collect inspiration on all things: clothes, decor, and entertainment.

But to get the site off the ground, Silbermann and his co-founder Evan Sharp spent years developing and testing different features and watching traffic grow at an alarming rate.

The Origins of Pinterest

Just we saw who owns Pinterest? And who is Ben Silbermann? Now we see the Origins of Pinterest.

Silbermann got the idea for Pinterest after he discovered that his niece’s wedding album was getting destroyed. “It had all of these pictures with tiny little pins at the bottom of the picture and it was just getting destroyed,” he says. So, to save the pictures, he decided to do something about it. Silbermann started experimenting with images and other content to see if he could improve, but that didn’t work out so well. He also realized that a lot of people were similar to him, trying to do similar things.

So, to get everyone to have their Pinterest page, Silbermann made a mobile app that would let people pin any picture of their choosing.

How Pinterest got started

In 2007, Ben created a project for the yearbook class. He named it Pinterest, and in the original proposal, he explained why the service would be beneficial.

Ben is a huge geek when it comes to tech. He loves making online tools that work well and that people will use. So he thought up Pinterest as a tool that could help people discover great images from the web. “When I first started Pinterest, I didn’t think much of the commercial aspect of the site, but I’m very pleased that it’s turned into something that people use every day,” says Silbermann.

Evan, on the other hand, is no stranger to starting businesses. He also had an online side project: A language-learning app called Duolingo.

Pinterest’s history

Pinterest was initially founded under the name Picaboo, but it was called Pinterest a year later. The name of the company, however, is an inside joke.

The company’s name is made up of the words “pinner” and “boon.” Silbermann said the word reflects a time when you would pin pictures on a bulletin board. The two words also have no relationship with each other. But Evan Sharp has a different story.

“So we brainstormed a name. We went through like 10 different names,” he said. “One was Pinbox, which had an actual meaning.”

On the way to an event, Silbermann spotted a pack of bumper stickers on the side of the road that had the word “pin.” He noticed they were for a skateboard company called Stance. He asked Sharp to take a look.
